Rochester’s aging water system includes pipes more than 150 years old

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — After several major water main breaks last year, new data obtained by 13WHAM News sheds light on the condition of Rochester’s underground water infrastructure, and reveals just how old parts of the system are.

According to documents obtained from the City of Rochester’s Bureau of Water, some of the city’s pipes date back to 1873, making them more than 150 years old.

Rochester’s water system is extensive. The city operates roughly 600 miles of water mains, along with 75 miles of transmission lines that carry water from Hemlock Lake into the city. While much of the system has been updated over time, a portion of it remains significantly aged…
