Lilac Festival officials predict ‘magnificent bloom’ this year thanks to cold, snowy winter

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Lilac Festival is less than a month away, and officials say to expect a magnificent bloom this year.

The warm weather expected leading up to the festival should keep the buds right on track. But the real reason for the expected great bloom is because of the cold, snowy winter.

“Lilacs require a period of dormancy. So if you have a really warm winter it can mess up the blooms for the spring. And also lead to things like mildew and stuff that’s really not healthy for the plant,” said Brad Hutton, superintendent of horticulture for Monroe County Parks…
