Louisiana could drop inspection stickers but 5 parishes would still need emissions tests

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana drivers could soon replace their annual vehicle safety inspection sticker with a self-installed QR code under a proposal backed by the governor and House lawmakers.

The change would eliminate the requirement for third-party safety inspections, but drivers in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Livingston, Iberville, and Ascension parishes would still need emissions testing under federal law.

The proposed QR code would cost $6 when drivers register their vehicles through the Office of Motor Vehicles, compared to the current $10 safety inspection fee. Some of that money used to go to those inspection businesses, but under the proposal, 100% of that $6 fee would go to the state, saving drivers money and allowing the state to collect slightly more in tax revenue.

Impact on inspection businesses

James Thibodeaux, a local inspections worker in Baton Rouge, said the change would mean “half the time plus half the money, at least it’s half the time, so you can do more with a certain amount of time.”…
