Sunstone Way, a nonprofit operating six homeless shelters in and near Portland, will lay off 175 people when it closes at the end of June, according to a notice issued Wednesday by Oregon’s dislocated worker unit.
Not all of the nearly 300 beds operated by Sunstone Way will close. Clackamas County’s 24 beds will remain open. And the approximately 100 beds funded by Multnomah County are set to remain open. The county issued a request for proposals for a new entity to operate those shelters on Thursday morning.
Portland will pay Transition Projects, a different homeless services nonprofit, to operate 55 of the approximately 190 city-funded Suntone Way beds. Its other shelters currently run by Sunstone Way, including a 96-bed overnight-only shelter, will close…
