Akron advancing plan for Highland Square Special Improvement District, while implementing new safety steps

AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron said Friday it is moving forward with plans to establish a Special Improvement District in the Highland Square neighborhood while rolling out new safety measures along a busy commercial corridor.

A Special Improvement District, or SID, is a defined area where property owners agree to pay an assessment to fund services such as security, beautification and litter removal. City officials said a board made up of property owners within the Highland Square footprint has been formed to develop a services plan outlining how those funds would be used.

Once the plan is finalized, the city will circulate a petition requiring approval from property owners representing at least 60% of the district’s frontage. The proposal would then go to Akron City Council for final approval…
