Traffic frustration grows on Isle of Palms as leaders weigh expanding beach shuttle

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) — Getting onto the Isle of Palms on a sunny weekend can mean sitting in traffic for miles.

For some drivers, it’s becoming enough to stay away altogether. Now, leaders with Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority say they will make a decision next week on whether to expand the Beach Reach Shuttle to include Fridays, as demand for alternatives to driving continues to grow.

The free shuttle has run for six years, taking riders from Mount Pleasant Towne Centre to the beach on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. CARTA Board Chairman Mike Seekings said ridership has been steadily increasing — up 17% last season — with some of the biggest spikes during peak summer months…
