Erie County coroner reports higher than normal suicide trend through 2026

Suicides in Erie County are trending higher this year compared to the rate in 2025, according to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook. There have been 19 suicides recorded in the first four months of the current year.

The current rate of suicides puts Erie County on track to potentially surpass previous annual totals. In 2025, the total number of suicides reached 45, following 33 suicides reported in 2024. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, expressed his concern about the trend.

“As you can see, the numbers jump up and down, but 45 was pretty high and if we continue at this rate, we’ll probably hit that, but I’m praying that we don’t,” Cook said…
