Donor says he’s secured new location for Clothes for Joes veterans service center

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A donor says he has secured a new location for Clothes for Joes, a nonprofit working to build a veterans service center in Fort Wayne.

Mike Ackels, owner of the charity’s lead sponsor, 469 Cycle Shop, said he is donating a building on East Washington Boulevard to the organization. He said the old East Side Automotive Service Center will be converted into a one-stop shop for homeless veterans.

“Over here will be our check-in area,” Ackels said as he gave a tour of the building to 21Alive News. “This will get all gutted out and will be all showers, so that way they can come in here and take a shower and get cleaned up.”

Building renovation underway

Ackels said the building will be renovated to include showers and a barber’s room. He said veterans will be able to use the internet and phones and have mail sent to the location. He said the main space will be set up like a clothing store, with all items free…
