NJ school district proposes massive layoffs to close budget gap

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) — The West Orange School District may be forced to cut 70 or more positions for the 2026-27 school year, as it faces a projected $14 to 15 million budget gap.

“I think it’s best that us as a community come to a realization that we’re in a bad spot,” said Superintendent Hayden Moore during the March 26th Board of Education meeting.

The district said the only way to balance the budget is to make cuts. Its preliminary budget calls for a minimum of 70 full-time employee cuts, increased class sizes, consolidated courses, and a restructured middle school schedule.

“I’d say this year might be the most extreme we’ve seen in terms of districts spinning their wheels about, how can I handle this,” said Jonathan Pushman, senior director of advocacy for the New Jersey School Boards Association…
