Man gets 30-year sentence for killing young father in 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man convicted of stabbing another man to death outside a Providence bar was sentenced to prison Friday, more than 15 years after the killing took place.

Jason Lopes, 38, was sentenced to 30 years, with 20 to serve and the remainder suspended with probation. He’ll get credit for time served at the ACI, but not the time he spent on home confinement.

Last November, Lopes was found guilty of manslaughter in the December 2010 death of 22-year-old Zackary Marshall. He was initially charged with first-degree murder, but the jury convicted him of the lesser charge after a two-week trial…
