Police identify driver behind chase that ended in Onondaga Lake; investigators say truck was stolen

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Investigators have identified the man who police pursued on a chase that stretched through counties on Thursday and ended with him driving into a lake.

Dennis Williamson, from Rome, is being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center in Syracuse after both state troopers and Manlius police charged him for several offenses related to the chase. The 43-year-old was arrested off of the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Salina after he drove a dump truck into Onondaga Lake. He was sent to Upstate University Hospital for minor injuries.

Williamson already had nine active warrants and investigators believe he stole the dump truck (a Ford F-550) in Taberg, according to a statement from state police spokesperson Jennifer Jiron.

Manlius police told NewsChannel 9 | LocalSYR.com that the ordeal began when officers were in front of the Fayetteville fire station checking for distracted drivers. An officer had asked Williamson to pull into a parking lot for being on his cell phone, but he instead drove off…
