Commission recommends zoning code cleanup, urgent care expansion

The Fontana Planning Commission conducted a review of the city’s zoning and development code, looking to clarify unclear language, fix inconsistencies and ease the process of establishing certain business operations in the city. Associate Planner Cecily Session-Goins delivered the presentation detailing various amendments to Chapter 30 of the Municipal Code and an addendum to section 4 of the resolution.

“We’re looking to add a little bit of language to section 4 of the resolution,” Session-Goins said. “The gist of the language states that if there are any projects that are in process and have been deemed complete under current standards, not the new standards, they would be able to continue on with processing.”

First, the proposed changes specifically examine the definitions of medical land use in commercial zones. According to the associate planner, the city is specifically seeking to add definitions of acute and urgent care, which she said align with changes to medical uses in commercial zones. With the language amendments, Session-Goins said, the city hopes to change the code to allow urgent care land use in zone types C-1 and C-2, noting the similarity to typical medical offices. However, acute care uses will continue to be prohibited, as it is a more distinctly intense use than an urgent care facility, which Session-Goins said operates “more like a doctor’s office.”…
