In Valatie, Social House offers connection for aging residents

VALATIE — The smell of maple syrup wafted out the front door of The Social House early Thursday afternoon, down a staircase and wheelchair ramp, and into the parking lot.

Inside, about a dozen older adults were finishing lunch at the club’s “Bunny Hop” party, a nondenominational Eastertide celebration. The meal included scalloped potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, applesauce, a French toast bake and scrambled eggs. The walls were decorated with diner scenes, while multi-instrumentalist Mike Pagnani played fiddle and banjo.

The Social House is not a medical facility, and those who attend are not clients, founder Michaela Qualtieri said. They are members — more like family — and they create the programming…
