Savannah Guthrie Remembers Her Dad Amid Search for Missing Mom

Additional Coverage:

Savannah Guthrie’s family remains in the public eye as the search continues for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, who disappeared from her Arizona home near Tucson earlier this month. Nancy was last seen around 9:30 p.m. on January 31 and was reported missing the following day after she missed attending her local church service.

As updates unfold in this ongoing investigation, attention has also turned to Savannah’s late father, Charles Guthrie, a figure she has spoken about with great affection. In a 2014 essay for Today, Savannah described Charles as “an amazing, magnetic, joyous, charismatic, incredibly loving, warm, kind, forbearing personality.” She highlighted his unique combination of strength and tenderness, recalling how he could light up any room and turn even a routine trip into an entertaining adventure.

Charles and Nancy originally raised their family in Melbourne, Australia, before relocating to Tucson, Arizona, when Savannah was two years old. Tragically, Savannah lost her father at age 16 when he died suddenly of a heart attack. Reflecting on that painful time, she recalled how her mother delivered the heartbreaking news, an event that “tore her whole world apart.”

On Brooke Shields’ podcast “Now What?”, Savannah shared that her father, a mining engineer, had suffered a heart attack when she was 13 but that his eventual passing still came as a shock to the family. “He was our center,” she said, describing him as “larger than life,” funny, charming, and deeply loved by all.

Even now, Savannah admits she sometimes still sheds tears for her father, viewing those moments not as sadness but as expressions of enduring love. “Sometimes it feels good if I can have a tear or cry for my father,” she told Hoda Kotb on “Making Space.” “It’s me saying, ‘I still love you, Daddy.’”

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, fans and followers reflect on the warmth and resilience Savannah has often spoken of, qualities clearly rooted in the memory of her father.
