Sabrina Carpenter Faces Backlash After Controversial Comment at Coachella Debut

Sabrina Carpenter’s highly anticipated headlining debut at Coachella’s opening day on April 10, 2026, was met with mixed reactions after a moment during her set sparked criticism from fans. The 26-year-old singer delivered crowd-pleasing performances of hits like “House Tour,” “Taste,” and “Tears,” and transformed the stage into “Sabrinawood,” with a set design inspired by the iconic Hollywood sign.

However, during the show, an interaction with a fan drew negative attention. When a concertgoer cheered in a way that Sabrina described as “yodeling,” she asked the fan, “Is that what you’re doing?”

After the fan explained it was part of their cultural tradition, Sabrina replied, “That’s your culture, yodeling? Is this Burning Man or what?

This is weird,” before continuing with her performance.

This exchange quickly sparked backlash on social media, with many accusing Carpenter of cultural insensitivity. Several users on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that the fan’s cheer was actually an Arabic ululation, known as a zaghrouta, not yodeling. Critics called out the singer for dismissing the cultural expression and responding in a way they felt was disrespectful.

Comments ranged from calls to “cancel” Sabrina to accusations of ignorance and xenophobia. One user wrote, “Sabrina Carpenter is so ignorant… she called it yodeling and disrespectfully dismissed that it was part of the person’s culture.” Another added, “Mocking a zaghrouta as yodeling after being told its significance is just nasty.”

Despite the backlash, some fans expressed disappointment but urged understanding, while others stressed the importance of cultural awareness in public performances.

Sabrina Carpenter’s team has not yet issued an official response to the controversy.
