California gubernatorial candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing intense scrutiny after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, prompting a wave of condemnation and calls for him to withdraw from the race.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that one woman alleged Swalwell sexually assaulted her in both 2019 and 2024. After reviewing text messages and speaking with people she confided in, the woman said she refrained from contacting law enforcement at the time due to concerns about not being believed, as she was intoxicated during the incidents.
Swalwell has strongly denied the allegations, suggesting they are politically motivated, and has not indicated any intention to step down. He plans to provide an update after spending time with his family over the weekend.
In the wake of these claims, Swalwell’s staff released a statement expressing support for the women who have come forward. They described the alleged behavior as “abhorrent” and a betrayal of public trust, emphasizing that any staff members remaining in their roles are doing so out of necessity rather than endorsement of Swalwell.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed an investigation is underway into allegations made by a former Swalwell staff member, urging survivors and witnesses to come forward. The office highlighted its commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered support through specially trained personnel.
Several prominent figures have withdrawn their support for Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, including Sen. Adam Schiff, Rep.
Ruben Gallego, and the advocacy group Californians for a Fighter. Additionally, California Reps.
Jimmy Gomez and Adam Gray have stepped away from his campaign efforts.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is expected to seek the presidency in 2028, has largely refrained from commenting on the race but called the allegations “deeply troubling” and emphasized the need for them to be taken seriously. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while not endorsing any candidate, acknowledged the gravity of the accusations and suggested an investigation occur separate from the campaign.
As the situation continues to develop, pressure mounts on Swalwell both politically and legally, underscoring the serious nature of the allegations against him.
