Celebrating a Year of Community Impact: Mat-Su CAT’s 2025 Highlights
In 2025, the Mat-Su Community Action Team (CAT) demonstrated the power of volunteer leadership and community connection across the Mat-Su Valley. Throughout the year, dedicated CAT volunteers led and supported a wide range of outreach activities that centered on caregiving, financial readiness, social connection, and honoring those who have served.
The year began with a heartfelt effort to combat isolation among older adults. In February, volunteers organized the “Cupid Crew” Valentine’s outreach, delivering roses and handmade cards to residents at the Palmer Pioneer Home and the Alaska Veterans & Pioneers Home. This simple but meaningful gesture brightened days and reminded residents that they are seen, valued, and remembered by their community.
In April, the team convened the Willow Health Fair where volunteers connected residents with caregiving resources and distributed emergency preparedness supplies, helping families feel better equipped for Alaska’s unpredictable conditions. Later that month, the team co-hosted a Scam Slam Shred Day at the Palmer Senior Center, sharing information about AARP Fraud Watch Network and SMS text scam alerts. Held just after tax season, the free shredding event allowed seniors to safely dispose of sensitive documents while learning practical tips to prevent fraud and identity theft.
The Mat-Su CAT also made time to honor service and sacrifice. On Memorial Day in May and Veterans Day in November, volunteers participated in a wreath dedication ceremony at the Wasilla Armed Services Memorial Wall, paying tribute to local veterans and their families. This annual tradition reflects the team’s ongoing commitment to supporting the veteran community and recognizing their contributions.
Summer brought both flexibility and fun. While rain forced the cancellation of a planned “Night at the Ballpark” with the Mat-Su Miners, volunteers adapted by ensuring promised prize giveaways still reached the community during their day at the Alaska State Fair. That same spirit of connection carried through to two Movies for Grownups screenings at Valley Cinema, where community members gathered for a free movie night filled with laughter, conversation, and camaraderie.
August marked a major milestone with the 90th anniversary of Social Security. Volunteers helped host a celebratory and educational event at the Wasilla Area Seniors Center, sharing information about benefits, retirement security, and playing Social Security trivia—while also enjoying cake and conversation and a selfie photo booth with a giant anniversary card for Social Security. Later in the month, during the Alaska State Fair’s “Young at Heart” Day, the team staffed a respite tent for caregivers and receivers and information booth.
