JD Vance Faces Backlash After US-Iran Negotiation Briefing

JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, has come under intense criticism following his recent briefing on the US-Iran negotiations. The 41-year-old participated in a marathon 21-hour negotiation session in Islamabad, Pakistan, aimed at resolving escalating tensions between the two countries.

Joining Vance were Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and real estate investor Steve Witkoff. Despite the extensive discussions on April 11, no agreement was reached. Vance attributed the impasse largely to Iran’s refusal to meet American demands concerning its nuclear weapons program.

In a live address broadcast on C-Span after the talks, Vance praised Pakistan’s role, saying, “Whatever the shortcomings were in the negotiations, it wasn’t due to the Pakistanis, who did an amazing job and really tried to help us and the Iranians bridge the gap and get to a deal.”

He continued, “We’ve been at it now for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of subsequent discussions with the Iranians; that’s the good news. The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran, much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America.”

Vance emphasized that the US delegation clearly communicated its “red lines,” outlining what terms they were willing and unwilling to accommodate. However, he noted that Iran chose not to accept those terms.

The vice president’s remarks sparked a wave of criticism from C-Span viewers on social media platforms. Some questioned Vance’s capability and demeanor during the briefing.

One user on X commented, “He looks terrified, and that scares me,” while another remarked, “JD is way over his head. His arrogance might work in MAGA circles, but not on the global stage, especially in the Middle East.”

Others were more blunt, with one stating, “This administration fails spectacularly at every single thing they try,” and another warning, “If no deal is reached, JD will be the fall guy.” Questions also arose about Vance’s qualifications for handling such complex diplomatic negotiations.

Meanwhile, former President Trump was notably absent from the talks, attending UFC 327 at Miami’s Kaseya Center instead. Accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and family members, Trump was seen conversing with Rubio during the event. Despite his physical absence, Trump maintained “constant communication” with the US team in Pakistan, with Vance reporting he spoke with the president at least six times during the negotiations.

As the diplomatic efforts stall, questions remain about the path forward and the administration’s approach to resolving one of the most delicate foreign policy challenges.
