Cash, Isotopes tickets exchanged for guns at APD buyback event

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) partnered with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence to host its annual gun buyback event Saturday morning. People were able to bring in working firearms in exchange for cash.

APD also gave away tickets to upcoming New Mexico United and Isotopes games to participants. This was the fifth year that APD hosted this event to prevent gun violence and get as many guns off the street as possible.

“We never know what happens to a gun when we let it go. This gives people the opportunity to know it’s never going to get into unsafe hands,” said Miranda Viscoli, executive director of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence.

All of the guns are dismantled on site and sent to the Southwest Educational Partners and Training, where students forge the scrap metal into tools, instruments, and art pieces…
