Customs officers in Upstate NY seize $100K in hearing aid batteries for violating child safety law

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Upstate New York seized nearly 350,000 hearing aid batteries valued at approximately $100,000 after determining they violated federal child safety standards.

The batteries, discovered at the Peace Bridge warehouse on March 26, failed to meet requirements under Reese’s Law, which mandates secure, child-resistant battery compartments for products containing button cell or coin batteries to prevent children from ingesting them.

Officers at the Port of Buffalo first inspected the commercial shipment on Feb. 9 and detained the batteries for further investigation. CBP then submitted samples to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, whose investigators confirmed the violations and recommended seizure…
