Lawmaker targets parking ticket loophole after HNN Investigates found millions unpaid

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A state lawmaker is looking to close a loophole for those who rack up huge fines from unpaid parking tickets following an HNN Investigation last month that showed the state is owed nearly $15.3 million.

A 31-year-old Honolulu woman, who didn’t want her name used, has a handful of overdue parking tickets in her glovebox. She accumulated them mostly when out with friends in Waikiki.

“I just throw it in a drawer or put them in my glove compartment and then forget about it,” the woman said. “I think I just get busy. I have other things to do.”

She’s not alone. An HNN investigation used data provided by the state Judiciary and found thousands ignore parking citations. The state does not provide the names of registered vehicle owners, just the license plate numbers…
