Nearly 200 East Bay college students just got a surprise text: Your debt is gone

Nearly 200 Contra Costa College students got some unusual, and very welcome, financial news on Monday.

“Any debt you have to the college is officially eliminated. It’s true. No joke,” Kimberley Rogers, president of the public community college, announced in a short video texted to students Monday morning.

The college’s foundation agreed to spend $31,490 to eliminate unpaid debt — not just student activity fees, but also overdue tuition bills — owed this year by 181 students at the college in San Pablo.  The IOUs ranged from a mere $2 to a high of $980. Students were in arrears by an average of $173 each…
