Most Shreveport renters spend 30% or more of their income on housing, study says

Northwest Louisiana renters are among those spending the largest portion of their incomes on housing statewide, according to a new study.

More than half of renters living in Caddo, Bossier, DeSoto and Webster parishes pay more than 30% of their income on housing, a statewide study by the Center for Business and Economic Research at LSU Shreveport reports. Only New Orleans-area renters were more cost-burdened.

The study, based on the 2024 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, found that 51.3% of the more than 60,000 northwest Louisiana region renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs, a status defined by the study as “cost burdened.”…
