Thousands in Rochester could be without power as Winter Utility Protection ends

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Winter has passed, but electric bills remain. Many in Rochester could see the power go off if those bills remain unpaid.

“We really want to remind customers that, you know, disconnecting a customer is for nonpayment is a last resort,” said Alexis Arnold, Senior Communications Manager for RG&E. Arnold said they take every route to inform their customers about this deadline. “We’ve been reminding our customers is that winter heating protections, they end today, April 15th, but our customer assistance doesn’t stop,” she said. “There is multiple, avenues for customers to be able to make those payments if they’re behind before we get to a shut off.”

Now is the shut-off season, and already many customers are in arrears on their utilities. Arnold said if you’re past a certain number of days on your bill, there’s no avoiding it. “We’re not talking a day or two behind. You know, this would be beyond 30 days providing multiple notifications including bill messages, reminder notices, phone calls, eventually a termination notice.”…
