Overall crime down in Portsmouth, though challenges remain, police say

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Crime trends in Portsmouth are showing signs of improvement in early 2026.

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins presented first-quarter crime data, describing the situation as “improving but complex.” While overall crime and several categories of violent crime have declined, others are on the rise.
