FDOT provides exclusive look inside, at the top of the Sunshine Skyway

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – The Sunshine Skyway is a Tampa Bay landmark used by tens of thousands of people each day.

Engineers with the Florida Department of Transportation are preparing for the bridge’s inspection later in the year.

“Every bridge, including the Skyway, is inspected on a two-year cycle,” said Seth Collie with FDOT bridge maintenance. “We’re looking at the towers, we’re looking at every square inch of the cables. We’re looking at the columns, the piles. We go under and do water inspections. Every square inch is being looked at because we have to touch every part to be able to tell how the bridge is performing.”
