NTSB says freight train hit Amtrak train twice in Memphis crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Federal investigators say a freight train backed into a stopped Amtrak train—and then hit it a second time in February’s collision in southwest Memphis.

According to the a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Amtrak train had already stopped after spotting the freight train ahead on the tracks.

Investigators say the freight crew initially believed the first impact was due to a brake issue, pulled forward, and then reversed again which caused a second, lower-speed collision.
