Lubbock cancer patient taking his steps towards full recovery

LUBBOCK, Texas–Lubbock local Gene Turnipseed has lived in Lubbock since 1975, and while the city has certainly changed over the years, his love for dancing stays the same.

“Since I retired, when I got prostate cancer. This is my main activity. The dance community is a big part of my life,” Turnipseed said.

Turnipseed had his cancer progress into his bones in the fall of 2020, and while meeting his doctors at Covenant Health’s Cancer Center, the opportunity to utilize Pluvicto opened for him.

“Trials that led to the approval of this medication essentially showed that Pluvicto helped men live longer. It helped maintain their quality of life. It helped delay the progression of disease and reduce symptoms… bone pain, for example, because a lot of prostate cancer actually metastasizes to the bones, causing pain,” said medical director Dr. Gabriel Axelrud.

He explained that Pluvicto is given in six total treatments, with Turnipseed being a part of the Covenant Health Cancer Institute, its 100th radioligand therapy administration (which is used for Pluvicto treatment), and said that this is a significant milestone for patients in our community and region…
