Asheville City Schools seek 10-cent supplemental rate to preserve essential programs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Leaders with Asheville City Schools are concerned that children’s standard of education could be at risk if Buncombe County commissioners are unable to approve their supplemental tax request.

District officials said they need an additional $2 million to maintain critical services, including school resource officers and several student programs that are not funded by the state.

According to an Asheville City Schools Supplemental Tax representation, in 2025, the community, staff and board advocated to restore the tax rate back to 12-cents, which was its initial rate before the pandemic when the county lowered the amount to 10-cents…
