SOFTBALL | Monterey gets off the deck in 7th inning, rides Fernandez’s clutch homer to win vs. LCP

As the landscape of 5A sports in West Texas have evolved and morphed in different directions the last several years, a few reliable constants have persisted.

  1. No matter what the sport, the level of competitiveness is going to be high level and intense
  2. Almost every chase for a district championship is going to go right down to the final game.

That has been magnified on the softball front the last several seasons as a handful of teams have climbed out of the long shadow cast for years by Coronado, and the 2026 hunt for the District 3-5A crown may be about as good as it has ever been with Monterey, Amarillo High and Lubbock-Cooper standing shoulder-to-shoulder and refusing to blink.

All three teams are playoff-bound next week, but nothing had been settled prior to Tuesday night: The Lady Sandies, Lady Plainsmen and Lady Pirates came into the final week with two district losses each, and two huge games were on the docket to settle the district crown and seeding for the postseason.

With the regular-season finish line looming, Monterey and LCP took center stage against each other Tuesday night and added the latest fantastic chapter to what has evolved into the Hub City’s best rivalry on the softball diamond…
