California Insurance Fraud Scheme Involves Bear Costume Damaging Luxury Cars

LOS ANGELES – Three individuals in California have been sentenced for orchestrating an unusual insurance fraud scheme that involved a person dressed in a bear costume deliberately damaging high-end vehicles.

According to the California Department of Insurance, the group used a person in a bear suit to stage fake attacks on a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes vehicles in 2024. They then filed fraudulent insurance claims totaling nearly $142,000. Authorities dubbed the investigation “Operation Bear Claw.”

Two men from the Los Angeles area and a woman pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud charges. They were sentenced to participate in a weekend jail program followed by probation. Additionally, two of the defendants were ordered to pay more than $50,000 in restitution.

A fourth individual is scheduled to face a court hearing in September.

The suspects submitted several videos showing what appeared to be a bear moving inside the vehicles, along with photos depicting scratches on the cars’ seats and doors. However, a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reviewed the footage and determined the creature was clearly a human dressed in a bear costume.

During a search of the suspects’ home, law enforcement officials recovered the bear suit.

While real bears have increasingly become a nuisance in California-breaking into homes and trash cans, and even venturing into pools and hot tubs-this case revealed a more unusual twist on the state’s ongoing bear encounters.
