First responders locate body of missing diver offshore Sand Island

KALIHI, Hawaii (Island News) — The body of a diver who went missing in the waters off of Sand Island was found on Friday night following a multi-agency search.

The Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Ocean Safety, State of Hawaii Airports Rescue Firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard searched for a man in his 30s around Mokauea Fishing Village in Kalihi on Friday afternoon, April 17, 2026. The fire department said he planned to kayak out to Mokauea Island and did not return. The man’s family told the Honolulu Police Department that he left at 8 a.m. and was supposed to return at noon.

Police said his family went to the boat ramp on Sand Island Parkway and found his truck, but he was not there. They called 911 at 5:45 p.m. to report him missing and first responders immediately began their search by sea and air. At 6:32 p.m., a kayak was found by air along the rocks, but it did not belong to the diver…
