The Buffalo Zoo announced the death of Zhanna, a female Amur tiger who was humanely euthanized after her health declined in recent days.
At nearly 18 years old, Zhanna was considered geriatric for her species. Female Amur tigers typically live between 14 to 16 years on average, according to the zoo.
The tiger’s care team had closely monitored Zhanna as she showed signs of aging in her later years. Zoo officials said her recent health decline began to impact her quality of life and daily activities, leading to the decision to euthanize her.
