STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island homeless shelters continue to be a topic of heated debate, with elected officials leading a rally near the proposed Midland Beach location on Saturday.
The proposed 1111 Capodanno Boulevard homeless shelter, which opened in 2023 as a migrant facility, was previously Island Shores, a care residence for senior citizens. Since its inception and planned permanence, residents and politicians alike have been protesting the homeless shelter.
In March, questions regarding the location’s legality began to circulate due to the city’s zoning laws and the four-story building’s certificate of occupancy.
