AI glitch sends false school shooting alarm in Missouri

MT. VERNON, Mo. (KODE) — A tech glitch caused a panic in one Missouri community when it sent out an alert about a school shooting that didn’t actually occur.

CrimeRadar, an AI powered app for tracking crime and public safety, says they experienced a tech malfunction, leading to a small panic in Mt. Vernon when it sent out a false alarm that a shooting had occurred at Mt. Vernon Elementary School.

According to CrimeRadar, the incident occurred when their automated system misunderstood what emergency dispatch audio was saying, leading to it sending out a false report of a “shooting” at the elementary school, when the dispatch audio was actually saying “show me.”

The school immediately went into lockdown, acting out emergency plans quickly in order to keep students safe. Sheriff Brad DeLay commended the Mt. Vernon School District and Superintendent Christina West for their handling of the incident, saying they did an “excellent job.”…
