Freeze Warning tonight for many in the DMV

Today will be the coldest day all week, even with a decent amount of sunshine, along with an occasional sprinkle or a pop-up shower. Helping to make it feel colder throughout the daylight hours will be the wind. Expect sustained winds between 10 and 20 mph, with the occasional gust of upwards of 30 mph.

Overnight into Tuesday, the wind will go calm, and with starry skies, widespread frost and freeze conditions will be felt in the DMV. As a matter of fact, the National Weather Service has upgraded yesterday’s Freeze Watch to a Freeze Warning, as some could wake up to mid-20s Tuesday morning!

Weather Forecast for DC, Maryland and Virginia

Normally, in the District, the last freeze is late March into early April. Still, this spring will be different as the thermometer will drop to freezing and below in D.C. and outlying areas approximately 10 days past the average date of the last spring freeze. This is all based on a 30-year climate period for areas along/east of I-81. Given the warm days that we have already seen in the region, many areas are ahead of schedule from a growing standpoint, so this freeze could damage plants and delay crop progress. The only areas that are not under a Freeze Warning are the far western Maryland counties of Garrett and Allegany counties as the growing season has not started there yet.

After the morning freeze, Tuesday morning, the day will marked improve and warm up into the middle and upper 50s to the lower 60s by the afternoon. It will also be a day that is less windy, making it feel quite a bit warmer than today.

By Wednesday, and for the rest of the work week, warmer air will make a return to the DMV, as daytime highs return to the 70s and lower 80s. In addition, much of the time period should remain dry, but a shower or thunderstorm can`t be ruled out on Wednesday or over the next weekend…
