Alabama priest who founded Avondale coffee shop church will soon have a new tropical home

The Rev. Katie Nakamura Rengers, an Episcopal priest who founded a coffee shop church in Avondale in 2015, is moving to a tropical island locale, she announced on social media.

Beginning in June, Rengers will serve as Priest in Charge of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her husband, the Rev. Josiah Rengers, who has been rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Birmingham since 2015, will be taking a job as a school chaplain there. They have two daughters, Naomi and Katherine.

Nakamura Rengers founded The Abbey coffee shop in Birmingham as a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Birmingham on Valentine’s Day in 2015. It was funded with a $100,000 grant from the Episcopal Church Center to be a “church without walls.”…
