A Monday morning house fire on River Street near Pine Street in Newton sent a thick column of smoke over the neighborhood and briefly turned a quiet block into a full-scale emergency scene. A stretch of River Street was closed to traffic as firefighters and mutual-aid crews worked to knock down flames while neighbors watched from nearby sidewalks. Police urged people to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews handled the blaze.
