Steven and Jean Moore are turning their marketing firm, Moore Exposure in Fayetteville, over to their daughter, and this is a good time to mention one of the things that has separated the company from a lot of other marketing and promotions companies.
There are around 1 million military “challenge coins” out there, produced by Moore Exposure under Steven Moore’s careful attention to detail.
You may be familiar with challenge coins. They are often presented by commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit, or the unit as a whole. They are also sometimes given to visitors to military units and installations. There are a number of theories about how challenge coins got started.
Moore, a Monroe native, came to Fayetteville after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill in 1983. The XVIII Airborne Corps was recruiting in Chapel Hill for the public affairs office. He was hired for his writing skills, not his military knowledge. At that point, “I don’t even know how to tell a private from a general,” he said.
