MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Multiple navigation locks on Lake Okeechobee’s north shore will temporarily close beginning Tuesday night as lake levels continue to recede, the South Florida Water Management District announced Monday.
The district said the closures are being made for safety reasons after the lake level dropped below 12 feet National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD), or 10.70 feet North American Vertical Datum (NAVD), a threshold referenced in a navigation notice first issued Feb. 27.
NGVD is a term engineers and water managers measure height above sea-level-based reference points. Like NGVD, NAVD is also a measuring baseline surveyors and water managers use to track elevation. These measurements do not mean the water is 12 feet deep or 10.70 feet deep…
