Central Alabama Water accepts state loans to ID, replace lead lines

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Central Alabama Water’s board voted Monday to accept more than $56 million in two partially-forgivable loans to find and replace lead/unknown service lines in its system, a requirement under EPA rules finalized in 2024.

A total of $13.7 million of the combined loans is forgivable, and the work will play out over several years.

Service lines running from the meter to a private home are considered a homeowner’s responsibility, but under this ADEM-arranged loan program, funds from these loans can cover the cost of replacing those under the direction of CAW…
