Shark experts predict ‘Sharky Summer’ for San Diego as marine heat wave pushes juvenile white sharks north

SAN DIEGO — A marine heat wave is driving juvenile white sharks toward Southern California earlier than usual, and shark researchers are calling it a “Sharky Summer.”

Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, says conditions this year are mirroring those of 2015, when an El Niño brought an unusually high number of juvenile white sharks to Southern California beaches.

“Right now, we are suspecting it’s going to be a Sharky Summer because the conditions are starting to match that of what we saw in 2015,” Lowe said…
