Baltimore County Police make arrest in 2002 missing person cold case

ARBUTUS, MD—Detectives with the Baltimore County Police Department have made an arrest in the 24-year-old disappearance of Michelle Rust, a case that had remained unsolved since the summer of 2002.

Authorities announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted the victim’s husband, Dwight “DJ” Rust Jr., on a charge of first-degree murder. Rust was taken into custody on April 21 and is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

The investigation began on July 20, 2002, when officers responded to a home in the 1800 block of Clarke Boulevard in Arbutus. At the time, Dwight Rust told investigators that his 24-year-old wife had left their residence at approximately 9:30 a.m. to purchase supplies for their son’s third birthday party.
