Deed theft fighter jailed in her case to keep her home

BEDFORD STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A woman who’d said she’d do whatever it took to prevent the deed to her home from being stolen is having that resolve tested as she remains behind bars on Rikers Island.

Despite efforts by her family, community activists, and elected officials, Carmella Charrington has been held for six days and counting in relation to her plight. Her supporters say that the longer she remains locked up, by order of a judge, the more challenging it may be for her to fight to keep her home.

It’s in the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, and is where family members, friends, and activists stood outside all day on Tuesday in an effort to protect the home. For two years, Charrington has been in a dispute over its deed, even though her family has owned the four-story brownstone for more than 60 years.

“It’s just like, bananas,” said Charrington’s son, William McFadden, about his mother being in jail. She was declared in contempt of court by the judge in her dispute with developer 227 Group LLC…
