Florida AG Uthmeier defends not enforcing some state laws; former state attorney objects

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier visited Tampa on Tuesday to announce an investigation related to artificial intelligence following a mass shooting at FSU in 2025.

Following that news conference, he took questions from reporters. Uthmeier answered a question involving a decision to not enforce dozens of state laws that include race-based action. He said those laws are in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.

“I, like other official state constitutional officers, take an oath,” Uthmeier said. “I stand by the constitution.”
