Tulsa police to roll out new records system, replacing nearly 50-year-old platform

TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Tulsa police are preparing to replace a records system that has been in place for nearly 50 years, a long-planned upgrade officials say could change how officers track and respond to crime.

The department’s current system is “50 years old and written like in COBOL, an old programming language,” Major Ryan Perkins said. “It’s had a couple of like minor upgrades for appearance, but the reality is it’s an old, basic database.”

Tulsa police said the replacement has been in the works for more than a decade. The project started more than 10 years ago and has been funded largely through a voter-approved bond, with about $10 million invested into the upgrade so far…
