A proposed four-story, 48-unit apartment development at the Butzel Family Recreation Center on Detroit’s east side is sparking debate between neighbors concerned about safety and green space, and supporters advocating for affordable housing.

If the plan moves forward, the recreation center’s parking lot would be replaced by the apartment building. Developers said they would need to build another lot out front for the project to proceed.
