The Lewter District officially opened April 14 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of a $50 million mixed-use development that blends new construction, adaptive reuse and luxury residential living across 1.5 acres in the city’s historic core.
Developed and constructed by Emergent Properties and RNGD, the project transforms the former Lewter Hardware Co. site into a live-work-dine destination while honoring the legacy of the family business that served the Huntsville community for nearly a century before closing in 2022.
At the center of the development is 223 Washington St., a new five-story, 75,000-square-foot Class A office building designed by EskewDumezRipple. The property includes 4,500 square feet of ground-floor retail, oversized windows, a custom brick masonry facade inspired by the surrounding architecture of Courthouse Square, a lobby with custom millwork and off-street executive parking.
