Three former Jackson officers charged in taser death still awaiting trial

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A man died after being tased more than 80 times by Jackson police, and more than three years later, the three former officers charged in his death have yet to stand trial.

Keith Murriel’s death was ruled a homicide by the state medical examiner, but the cases against former Officers Kenya McCarty, Avery Willis and James Land have been delayed nearly 20 times altogether.

The incident

On New Year’s Eve 2022, Officers Kenya McCarty and Avery Willis met Keith Murriel outside an apartment complex. They asked him to leave after they were told he had been harassing people in the parking lot.

When he came back, McCarty and Willis tased him. Court documents show officers tased Murriel more than 80 times…
