Roundabouts in East Tennessee aim to curb crashes, enhance traffic flow in growing areas

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Roundabouts are becoming a common solution for highly trafficked areas in East Tennessee. In the past two decades, several have been constructed, including more recent ones in Morristown and Powell.

One of the latest is a roundabout in South Knoxville at the intersection of Sevier Avenue, Island Home Avenue and Foggy Bottom Street. There is a temporary four-way stop in place as crews work on drainage and concrete before constructing the circular intersection.

Cody Gentry is the city’s Vision Zero coordinator. The goal for Vision Zero is to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets. Gentry said roundabouts play a part as a safer alternative than traditional intersections…
